Our small, friendly classes in our Canonmills studio give children the chance to explore, experiment and develop their artistic skills. With supportive guidance, each session offers the time and space to create with confidence.

Action Hero in Motion: Animation Adventure
Ages 6-10 years | 4.30pm-6pm
In this exciting 10-week term, children will journey into the world of stop-motion animation! Designed to inspire creativity and build confidence, this hands-on course invites young artists to master three essential project components: creating a unique main character, choosing a vibrant setting, and developing a storyboard.
Students will transform their illustrated figures into a moving Action Hero with clever paper mechanisms. After designing their 2D worlds and planning frames through storyboarding, we will use animation tools to bring their short animarion adventure to life, fostering imagination and technical skills through every stage of the experience.
Working with tutor demonstrations and individual guidance, students will experiment with a variety of materials while developing confidence and their creative expression.
All materials are provided, and no previous experience is required.

Stop Motion Film Making: Animation Masterclass
Ages 10-14 years |
4.30pm-6pm
Master the complete animation process in this ten-week course designed for young animation lovers and art lovers alike. Students will navigate the transition from conceptual art to production, focusing on the technical and narrative complexities of stop-motion animation. Throughout the term, students will exercise full creative autonomy as they engineer a unique main character, construct a sophisticated cinematic setting, and execute a comprehensive storyboard.
Using clever paper mechanisms to bring Action Heroes to life, students will apply industry techniques to capture their short films using animation tools, fostering both technical precision and creative problem-solving at every stage.
Working with tutor demonstrations and individual guidance, students will experiment with a variety of materials while developing confidence in observation, composition, colour and creative expression.
All materials are provided, and the classes are suitable for a range of abilities.
Saturday Portfolio Development
Contemporary Still Life
Ages 14+ | Art & Portfolio Development
10am-12pm with Cate Parr
This ten-week intensive course is designed for students building a portfolio for further study in art and design or simply wishing to explire their creativity in greater depth. We move beyond traditional fruit bowls to explore "The Modern Object," focusing on personal identity, consumer culture, and dynamic composition. Students will master classical painting techniques using a mix of acrylics and oils while developing an individual artistic voice.
Designed for young artists with a growing passion for creativity, this course offers the opportunity to strengthen technical skills while exploring the process of building a thoughtful and personal body of work while encouraging individual interpretation and artistic development.

About Children's Term Classes
Our term-time courses run in 10-week blocks throughout the year for ages 6 to 16 with a half-term break. Projects have previously covered drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture and printmaking, with themes tailored to each age group. Projects may change each term.
